The Centre for African Studies Basel
With the foundation of the Centre for African Studies Basel (CASB), the University of Basel has created a prominent centre for Africa-related teaching and research in Switzerland. The Centre acts as an interface for academic exchanges between disciplines, faculties and institutions outside the university. It coordinates teaching and research on Africa and reflects Basel’s longstanding engagement with Africa.
The Centre is attached to the Faculty of the Humanities, the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Theology. Among its associate members are the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, the Museum of Cultures, mission 21 (the former Basel Mission) and the Basler Afrika Bibliographien (Namibia Resource Centre - Southern Africa Library). On the basis of these resources and competencies the Centre for African Studies Basel offers a Masters Degree in African Studies as a consecutive university degree, which was introduced in the Winter semester of 2002/2003.
Besides its academic activities the Centre reaches out to the public by promoting cultural events relating to Africa through its website and regular mailings. In order to subscribe to our mailing list please go to Newsletter.
