Call for Papers: Transnational Korean Pentecostalism

Nova Religio: The Journal of Alternative and Emergent Religions

Nova Religio calls for papers on the transnational nature of South Korean Pentecostalism. South Korean Pentecostalism has evolved as a major strand in the global Pentecostal movement. Although research has produced a number of studies on the general history of Korean Pentecostalism and on single church histories, our knowledge of Korean Pentecostalism in its global impact, however, remains comparatively modest. The interaction of Korean Pentecostals with peoples of other cultural and religious heritages is enormous, irrespective of particular church traditions or historical backgrounds and is not restricted to affluent mega-churches. Korean Pentecostals form part of urban Asian American milieus and are operating among immigrant communities in Europe, others adapt specific theologies of religion in settings with varying Islamic majority populations. Shamanistic-inspired Korean Pentecostals, who are considered heretical by mainstream Pentecostals in their local Korean context, offer fresh inventories of the fight against “demonic powers” in East Africa. Those few examples suffice to assume the heterogeneous theological and structural texture of Korean Pentecostalism in a transnational perspective.
Nova Religio asks for papers on characteristic features of transnational Korean Pentecostalism. Articles may cover a survey of Korean Pentecostalism in a single country, or interpret the presence of a specific church in diverse contexts. Contributions can also choose a thematic approach to identify comparative advantages of Korean Pentecostal traditions within the global Pentecostal movement, or can follow up processes of transcultural exchange and translation of Korean Pentecostal theologies.

This special issue will be guest-edited by Prof. Dr. Andreas Heuser (Faculty of Theology, Basel University).
Abstracts of about 150 words should be submitted to Heuser at the email address below by 15 November 2012 in order to elicit his feedback. Papers should be submitted to Heuser no later than 31 May 2013. Abstracts and papers should be saved as Word .doc or .docx files.
The preferred length of articles is around 8,000 words, including endnotes, with a maximum length of 10,000 words including endnotes. Submission of photographs or other graphics is encouraged when they can substantively enhance an article.
Accepted manuscripts must follow the Chicago Manual of Style for citations and should be submitted according to these style guidelines. All references should be in endnotes, numbered throughout the manuscript with the auto-numbering feature of the word processing program.

Each paper submitted will be subjected to peer review. If the paper is accepted for publication, the journal’s editors reserve the right to edit for length and clarity, with the agreement of the author. The editors also reserve the right to edit for usage and style.
Authors of papers accepted for publication will receive a pdf file of their article and two free copies of the issue in which the article appears.
