Film: Cobra Verde
Part of the series Memory in Motion
Werner Herzog's adaptation of Bruce Chatwin's "The Victory of Ouidah" tells the historically valid (although literarily and cinematographically manipulated) story of Brazilian slave-trader Francisco Manoel da Silva, who was in close coorporation with the king of Dahomey in the 19th century, and established his own power base in Benin that was built both on violence and hybrid forms of culture.
