Zimbabwe: Youth and Advocacy for Transformation

How can the voice of youth be amplified in order to make it heard in society and politics? Traditionally youth are required to be silent and wait for adults to give them permission to speak. Yet youth represent more than 60 percent of Zimbabwe's population. The high rate of unemployment, the collapse of the education system, the HIV&AIDS pandemic as well as the general leadership crisis affect them more than any other group. Society is in general suspicious of young people who are assumed to be undisciplined, violent and irresponsible. In the present transformation period, youth have managed to come together under YETT, the Youth Empowerment and Transformation Trust, and to make a meaningful input by formulating their views and engaging local and national authorities in a number of issues.

The director of YETT, Lucy Mazingi, will speak about the issues affecting youth and the impact of YETT on the national discourse.
