Call for papers: ‘ECOWAS and Democratic Reversals in West Africa’

African Renaissance, Vol. 9 No 2 2012

At a time of unparalleled optimism that democratic consciousness is being gradually cemented in the consciousness of many Africans, some parts of West Africa, for a long time highly infamous for its ‘man on the horseback’, are showing signs of relapsing to their old, bad habits. Since the new wave of democratisation in Africa began in the 1990s, there have been military seizures or attempted seizure of power in some West African countries – Togo, Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Guinea Bissau.

How has the regional supranational group ECOWAS tried to meet the challenge? Is the democratic project across the West African sub-region under threat? (i.e. articles are welcome either on ECOWAS’ engagements with the states after the coup or the prospects of democratic relapse in the West African sub region)
