Dr. Claudia Roth (14.12.1955 - 23.7.2012)

With deep sorrow we take notice of the unexpected death of our colleague Dr Claudia Roth.
The social anthropologist was co-initiator and co-applicant of the research project "Construire son avenir: Selbstverständnis und Laufbahnpraktiken von Jungdiplomierten in Burkina Faso und Mali" (with Manfred Perlik and Noemi Steuer, directed by Elísio Macamo) funded by the Swiss Science Foundation.
Claudia Roth taught and conducted research at the Universities Berne, Zurich, Basel and Lucerne. Her regional focus was West Africa (Burkina Faso) where she investigated gender relations, intergenerational relations, age and social security working in the fields of development anthropology and developmental psychology (see the obituary by Dr Tabea Häberlein). For several years Claudia officiated as member of the board of the Swiss Society for African Studies SGAS/SSEA and contributed actively to the society.
Her concern with youth, generations and insecurity has also shaped the project Construire son avenir. The research group is committed to live up to Claudia's expectations when trying to fill the important gap created by her premature passing.
The Centre for African Studies Basel and the Swiss Society for African Studies will keep Claudia in grateful memory and extend their condolences to family and friends.
