SUMMARY:Conference: "Transitions – Past\, present and future of Sustainab
 le Governance in Africa"
DESCRIPTION:During the main funding period (2020–2026)\, fellows and part
icipants in a wide range of the activities at the Maria Sibylla Merian Ins
titute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) produced valuable insights i
nto how issues of sustainable governance are interwoven with the societies
\, cultures\, and politics in Africa and beyond. Scholars from a wide rang
e of disciplines collaborated to address contemporary and historical issue
s\, providing compelling analyses within the framework of MIASA’s resear
ch programme on ‘Sustainable Governance’.The final conference of this
phase thus provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on what has been ach
ieved so far. MIASA’s starting point was to promote research perspective
s and voices from the African continent and the Global South on sustainabl
e governance within a global academic landscape that is still dominated by
the Global North. Taking stock of the scientific results of the main fund
ing phase therefore begins with the question of whether this has been achi
eved\, and if so\, how. Has MIASA contributed to challenging dominant theo
ries and concepts related to sustainable governance derived in the Global
North? What lessons can be learned to further develop MIASA after the fina
l BMFTR funding phase?\\r\\nThis conference will be part of the “Day of
Scientific Renaissance in Africa” (DSRA) that the University of Ghana is
celebrating in the month of June 2026 on the theme of “Equitable Develo
 pment: Research\, Collaborate\, Empower.”
