SUMMARY:Research-Action Day: Combating Racism Against Black People
DESCRIPTION:The SSAS considers collaboration between academics and activist
s to be essential\, at a time when the challenges of living together are v
ery frequently called into question in Switzerland. One of the pillars on
which this structural racism rests is the colonial past of the country\, w
hich has been clearly identified by historians over the past decades. Whet
her it be the central place of the issue of immigration on the political a
genda\, the existence of everyday racism\, racial profiling\, or the portr
ayal of Africa and Africans as the absolute Other in children’s literatu
re – researchers argue that these phenomena can only be understood when
analyzed together\, as they constitute a postcolonial reality in Switzerla
nd. This reality fuels the daily work of activists who are tackling its ef
fects on the ground.\\r\\nWith this Research-Action Day\, which includes p
 resentations\, debates\, workshops\, and the screening of a documentary\,
the SSAS wants to create a platform for exchange and mutual support betwee
n scholars and members of civil society to develop strategies for action i
n both the short and long term.\\r\\nAdmission is free of charge. Everybod
y interested is welcome to join!\\r\\nRegistration deadline: 16 October 20
