Call for papers: "Sound Revolutions"
Cadernos de Estudos Africanos
The journal "Cadernos de Estudos Africanos" announces the opening of a call for articles for a special issue dedicated to the theme "Sound Revolutions". This issue aims to mark the 50th anniversary of the independence of Guinea-Bissau (1973), as well as Mozambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Angola (1975).
Coordinated by Marco Roque de Freitas (INET-md / NOVA FCSH) and Cristina Sá Valentim (ICS / ULisboa), this thematic issue proposes to explore the relevance of expressive culture – including sound, music and dance – in the processes of forming political subjectivities, nation-building, (re)creation, preservation, negotiation and/or contestation of identities, memories and heritage, as well as in the elaboration of power strategies orientated towards both domination and resistance.
Proposals for articles (between 8,000 and 10,000 words) can be co-authored in English or Portuguese and should be sent by 15 July 2025 to cadernos.cei@iscte-iul.pt, with the subject line "Sound Revolutions".
