Panel Discussion: Namibia and Germany – Problematic Heritage and Current Challenges

Freiburger Afrikagespräche

German colonial rule in Namibia (1884–1915) remains a decisive experience for both countries. Current efforts by both governments are controversial particularly in Namibia. An adequate recognition of the genocide against Ovaherero and Nama, which will have to entail material compensation, will not constitute the final achievement of reconciliation, but at best its point of departure. At the same time, the issues of involvement of affected communities in Namibia persists. For Germans it is essential to come to an understanding that they as well live in a postcolonial situation. The colonial past, which is often forgotten, has left deep marks on the violent history of the twentieth century with which we still have to grapple.
