SUMMARY:Webinar: Implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic for African Economie
 s and Development
DESCRIPTION:While the acute strain placed on health systems by the COVID-1
9 pandemic is already in evidence\, the long-term economic fallout from t
he crisis is yet to fully manifest. For Africa it is the economic impact
that may leave the most enduring legacy: from the direct expense of measu
res to treat\, detect and reduce the spread of the virus\; to the indirec
t costs of domestic lockdown measures\, global supply chain disruptions a
nd plummeting commodity prices. As decision-makers globally start to plan
for the scale of this economic shock\, strategizing in and on Africa to
meet the challenge will require unprecedented planning and commitment - a
nd will need to be matched by support from international partners to enab
le long-term recovery. At this online event\, Dr Hafez Ghanem will discuss
the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for African economies and thei
r development and poverty reduction efforts\, and will assess the priorit
ies and obstacles for establishing a comprehensive response to the crisis
. This webinar is part of the Chatham House Africa Programme's online eve
nt series. This event will be held on the record.\\r\\nDr Hafez Ghanem\,
