Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases and Diseases of Poverty

[Translate to English:] Nanotechnologie gegen Malaria

This KAA engages in developing, testing, implementing and monitoring approaches for the control of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and Diseases of Poverty. The University of Basel together with its associate institutes, mainly Swiss TPH, and the links to the private sector, is a key player in product-oriented research. We contribute to the R&D process of vaccines, drugs and diagnostic tests with the focus on diseases of poverty and NTDs by innovative basic research interlinked with preclinical studies. Novel interventions are tested and implemented through joint clinical research with African partners ranging from phase I up to phase IV.

Establishment of a pan-nematode drug development platform

The consortium establishes a R&D pipeline for anthelminthics targeting nematodes. The focus will be on soil-transmitted helminthiasis and onchocerciasis, since these infections are among the leading neglected tropical diseases.

ePOCT - Smartphone-based Clinical Decision Support Tool

To improve diagnosis and care of sick children, Swiss TPH developed a smartphone-based interactive decision support tool. ePOCT guides health workers through the entire consultation and recommends treatment based both on clinical signs as well as point-of-care test results.

The Bioko Island Malaria Elimination Project (BIMEP) addresses malaria morbidity and mortality affecting the population living and working on Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea, and informs a broader malaria control strategy for the rest of the African continent.

Evolution and Epidemiology of Rifampicin-Resistant Tuberculosis in Khayelitsha, Cape Town

This project uses next-generation whole genome sequencing (WGS) to study the evolution and epidemiology of DR-TB in Khayelitsha, a high HIV, TB and DR-TB burden setting in South Africa.
