Governance in Africa: Elections, Politics and Civil Society

Participants develop a thorough understanding of key concepts of governance, engage with the role of different actors involved in politics and appreciate different approaches to political order and transformation.

In 2019, several major African countries are holding general or presidential elections, including Nigeria, South Africa, Mozambique und Senegal. Elections are volatile junctures in African politics and in many instances allow compelling insights into the relation between state and society. In this course, elections serve as a point of departure for an engagement with the key structures and processes that constitute governance and politics.

Participants develop a thorough understanding of key concepts of governance, engage with the role of different actors involved in politics and appreciate different approaches to political order and transformation. In particular, the course addresses democratization processes in various African states, civil society agency in different settings as well as governance in fragile and conflict-affected contexts.
