Exhibition: "Y/our Colonial Gaze" (Basler Afrika Bibliographien)
Photographs from Namibia and South Africa from the 1950s and 1960s
Finissage / Closing: Friday, 27th October 2017, 6.00pm
The exhibition Y/OUR COLONIAL GAZE offers a glance into the impressive image archives of the Basler Afrika Bibliographien. On display are photographs from Namibia and South Africa of the 1950s and 1960s, taken by the German photographers Ruth Dammann and Anneliese Scherz as well as the Swiss journalist Hans Jenny. What makes photography from the colonial period so problematic? How can we define and read colonial image aesthetics? Who decides on which photographs to show to a larger audience? Where do we draw limits to curiosity? The conceptually designed exhibition experiments with artistic, curatorial and scientific perspectives. It presents narratives about the subjectivity and politics of selection processes, addresses challenges as well as the impossibility of presenting own stories by those people engaged with particular images, including the photographers themselves.
