The exhibition "Memories and impressions – 60 years of Swiss archaeology in Sudan" invites visitors to follow in the footsteps of these researchers who, season after season, are unearthing from the sands of Sudan the forgotten history of this region and the civilization that flourished there, from Prehistory (4th millennium BCE) to the Meroitic period (4th century CE). Through some one hundred archival photographs, maps, and excavation notebooks, as well as interviews with researchers, it brings to life the memory of fieldwork, the discoveries accumulated over the decades, and the powerful bonds of friendship.
The fascinating sites featured in this exhibition open the door to a new understanding of the history of the Nile Valley – spanning its long history and vast geography –where the connections between Egypt and sub-Saharan Africa are reexamined, moving beyond the Egypt-centric assumptions of the early 20th century.
The exhibition aims to commemorate 60 years of Swiss archaeological research in Sudan: the work initiated by the Genevan Charles Bonnet and his team as well as the research being currently carried out by two missions.
