Culturescapes Sahara 2025
Kamel Daoud, born in Mesra (Algeria) in 1970, is a journalist and writer with French citizenship. In his novel “Huris”, which won the 2024 Prix Goncourt, Kamel Daoud returns to the “black decade,” the Algerian civil war of the 1990s, which he had reported on as a journalist. His literary work pays tribute to women and their suffering. The novel “Huris,” which was banned in Algeria, gives a voice to those who have lost theirs, in particular the young girl Aube, whose scar on her neck and destroyed vocal cords are reminders of the bloody events. With flashbacks to the past and inner monologues, “Huris” is a work of remembrance: powerful, poetic, and political.
Participation is free of charge and the reading circle will conclude with refreshments. Multilingual discussions are welcome.
