Concert: Paul Hanmer & Derek Gripper feat. Hopkinson Smith - Desert Blues and Baroque
What is the sound of Mali's Kora music if performed on classical western instruments? Guitarist Derek Gripper (Cape Town) has developed a method to play the music of the West African 21 string instrument on the classical guitar. Together with pianist Paul Hanmer (Johannesburg) he now explores the combination with yet another European instrument of the baroque period - the clavichord. One of the oldest instruments with keys, the clavichord allows to modulate each note and offers itself for this kind of experiment. The two south african musicians are joined by luth maestro Hopkinson Smith (Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, Basel).
