Emily Conroy-Krutz: Christian Imperialism in the American Colonisation of Liberia

Series "Mission - Slavery- Colonialism Revisited"

What role did Christian missionary societies play in the context of slavery and colonialism? Are they historically entangled with racism and discrimination? In loose succession, Mission 21 brings the multi-layered history of Christian missions, colonialism and slavery into focus in order to sharpen the perception for the current social debate on racism and discrimination.

This talk discusses the founding of the American Colonization Society and its connections to American missionary societies in Liberia. It examines the early years of the Liberian colony and the work of white and black missionaries for both African American settlers and indigenous Africans in the region, as well as the conflicts that arose between white missionaries and parts of the colonial government.

Moderation: Claudia Buess,  Programme Manager Education, Mission 21.
