At an illegal party in Tunis, the young student Mariam meets the mysterious Youssef, with whom she leaves the party. During a romantic walk on the beach, the two are stopped by three policemen who brutally rape Mariam in a police car. The two escape and try to report the case to the police – in a country where women have no say. The police are no help and everyone else advises them to just keep quiet.
Based on true events, director Kaouther Ben Hania tells of toxic male-dominated authorities, conservative misogynistic social images and an unjust legal system in her film “Aala Kaf Ifrit (Beauty and the Dogs)”. Ben Hania's feverish camera follows the course of this night. An unsparing picture of a patriarchal society and a painful struggle for justice and an important precedent of human rights.
In the framework of Culturescapes Sahara 2025.
