Film screenings: "Western Sahara, the forgotten conflict"

With Asria Mohamed Taleb

Western Sahara was occupied by Morocco in 1975. In “Unsubmissive”, women from the occupied territory talk about gender-based violence and other human rights violations, and aggressive colonial settlement policies by Morocco. The Sahrawi-liberated area behind the 2,700 km long separation wall built by Morocco is heavily mined and dangerous for civilians – the film “Mutha” portrays the work of a team of Sahrawi women de-miners. Approximately 300,000 Sahrawis fled to southern Algeria during the invasion. The film “Champs Elysées” is a feature film in which children's eyes show us these refugee camps and their world.

In the subsequent film talk, artist/activist Asria Mohamed Taleb, curator of the project Jaimitna, and two young filmmakers from the Sahrawi refugee camps, Mumna Mohamed Salem and Mahyub Mohamed Abdalahe, talk about the importance of film for the Sahrawis' peaceful struggle for self-determination.

In collaboration with terre des hommes schweiz and in the framework of Culturescapes 2025.
