Film and talk: "Dahomey"
“Dahomey”, a documentary film by Mati Diop, deals with the return of 26 of the royal treasures of the former Kingdom of Dahomey to Benin. It premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in mid-February 2024 and won the festival's top prize, the Golden Bear. “Dahomey” was submitted by Senegal as an entry for the 2025 Academy Awards for Best International Film.
The debate about the restitution of cultural heritage from the Kingdom of Benin (in Nigeria) is a burning issue. Together with seven other Swiss museums, the Museum der Kulturen Basel is investigating the colonial provenance of its collections. Following “Dahomey”, Ursula Regehr (Africa curator, Museum der Kulturen Basel) will briefly introduce the project and discuss Mati Diop's film and the significance of things, collaborative research and restitution with Dr. Zainabu Jallo (social anthropologist and lecturer, University of Basel).
The movie is in French with French and German subtitles, the following talk will be held in English.
