Film festival: Freiburger Filmforum – Festival of Transcultural Cinema

21st edition of the Freiburger Filmforum

The Freiburger Filmforum – Festival of Transcultural Cinema is entering the next round! From 27 May to 1 June 2025, you can expect over 30 short and feature-length films, two panel discussions, an exhibition and mobile cinema around the Kommunales Kino – all with 35 filmmakers and experts on site.

Our present moment is marked by profound upheaval – political, ecological, and, in troubling ways, anti-democratic. The wars in Ukraine and Gaza, the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the global surge of authoritarianism: These developments are as disquieting as they are overwhelming. In such times, one can turn to cinema not for easy answers, but for new ways of seeing. What stories, what images can take a stand against these realities? Which films can open up spaces for hope, resistance, utopia – or at the very least, for deeper understanding?

What perspective do people have if they and the environment are treated this way? This year, it is mostly young and predominantly female filmmakers who have addressed these questions – and whose answers will be presented in the Main  Section of the festival week.

The program focus SUDAN, REMEMBER US draws attention to the almost forgotten conflict that began with the removal of the long-time ruler Al-Bashir in April 2019. The population's demand at the time for the establishment of a civilian government has remained unfulfilled to this day. Two documentary films and a panel discussion will take a closer look at the impact of this war on the Sudanese population in particular.
