Films & Talks: "Western Sahara: Unsubmissive Voices for Human Rights"

In the framework of the festival Culturescapes Sahara 2025

[Translate to English:] Haiyu

Despite Moroccan repression, Sahrawi activists gathered to document the violence perpetrated against their daughters, mothers, sisters, and grandmothers.

"Unsubmissive" (2023) shows the severity and extent of the violence, but also presents a picture of colonialism from a gender perspective that highlights the unwavering strength of these activists in the fight for the rights of their people. In "Little Sahara", children tell the story of the "last colony in Africa", Western Sahara, and that of the thousands of Sahrawi refugees in exile. "Haiyu – Rebel Singer Mariem Hassan and the Struggle for a Free Western Sahara" uses archive material and interviews to tell the life story of Mariem Hassan, who died in 2015 and was arguably the most important Western Saharan musician. She combined traditional music with elements of blues and jazz. Her songs play an important role in the struggle for the independence of Western Sahara. Her music is at the heart of the film.
