How to move forward in South Sudan? The role of the church in South Sudan’s peace process

with Ruedi Küng, Ferdinand von Habsburg-Lothringen and Rev. Peter Gai Lual Marrow

As their answer to the devastating civil war, the South Sudan Council of Churches in 2015 launched the Action Plan for Peace, which has attracted international attention. Three prominent experts analyse the role of the church as peacemaker and give first-hand impressions.

The experts:

  • Ruedi Küng: was editor for international politics for Swiss television and Radio DRS, this day SRF, as well as delegate of the International Committee of the Red Cross, among others in Sudan. Today, the veteran radio reporter on Africa presents information on African realities through the platform "InfoAfrica.ch".
  • Ferdinand von Habsburg-Lothringen: is senior advisor for peace and reconciliation at the South Sudan Council of Churches, appointed by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs. For the past 22 years, he has worked in the South Sudanese context as well as in conflict- and post-conflict countries in Africa (including for a long time with the UN).
  • Rev. Peter Gai Lual Marrow: is Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan and Chairman of the South Sudanese Council of Churches. He played a crucial role during the peace talks in Addis Ababa in 2015. Moreover, as leader of the third biggest church in the country, he holds a key position in the current peace process.
