Postcolonial Theories: Research, debates, challenges

Public panel discussion with Prof. Dr. Falestin Naïli (Near and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Basel), Prof. Dr. Erik Petry (Center for Jewish Studies, University of Basel), Dr. Henri-Michel Yéré (Sociology/African Studies, University of Basel) and PD Dr. Kijan Espahangizi (Department of History, University of Zurich). Moderation: Christoph Keller.

Recently, postcolonial theories have been criticised in various ways and sometimes with great vehemence. The current debate on postcolonial theories often proves to be polemical and characterised by both resentment and misunderstandings. The panel discussion sees itself as an intervention against simplifications and seeks a differentiated discussion about what postcolonial theories are, what they are capable of achieving and where their weaknesses lie.

The panel discussion will feature four researchers who all deal with postcolonial theories from different perspectives: Prof. Dr Falestin Naïli (Near and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Basel); Prof. Dr Erik Petry (Centre for Jewish Studies, University of Basel), Dr Henri-Michel Yéré (Sociology, African Studies, University of Basel), PD Dr Kijan Espahangizi (Department of History, University of Zurich). The panel discussion will be moderated by Christoph Keller.

This event is organised by the History Student Association in collaboration with the Department of History at the University of Basel. Followed by an aperitif in the foyer in front of the auditorium.

The majority of the event will be held in German, with parts in English. English translation will be provided for the German sections.
