The "Before Everyone’s Eyes” project series gives visitors the opportunity to look on as staff go about their research. The employees of the Museum der Kulturen Basel move their workstations to one of the museums’s showrooms and are available to talk in person at any time.
Eight Swiss museums have collaborated to investigate the provenance of their collections from the Kingdom of Benin, in dialog with Nigeria. From 5 February to 7 May 2025, the Museum der Kulturen Basel will be showing what has happened so far. 21 artifacts from the Kingdom of Benin are located in the museum – 15 arrived after the British military attack of 1897. How does the museum deal with this collection? How does cooperating with communities in Nigeria change the way collections are handled? Visitors are invited to talk to the museum staff about the history, significance and future of the artifacts.
