The Europainstitut at the University of Basel is searching for a doctoral candidate in the field of global history (under the supervision of Professor Corey Ross), starting on 1 September 2023 (or a start date by prior agreement). The position offers diverse and challenging responsibilities in an interdisciplinary, internationally-oriented and dynamic research and teaching environment.
Your role
- Providing support for research in the field of global history (with an emphasis on environmental history) and the history of Europe in its global context (18th-20th centuries), as well as completion of a doctoral dissertation in the field of history.
- Coordinating teaching activities in the field of history within the framework of the interdisciplinary Masters Program in European Global Studies in collaboration with others involved in delivering the Program, as well as supervising and advising students.
- Helping with the planning and delivery of lectures, conferences, public events and excursions.
- Active engagement with the interdisciplinary activities of the Institute (e.g. presentation of your research at Institute events) as well as with activities related to the academic administration of the Institute.
Your profile
- Candidates should have a Masters degree in History with excellent marks and either have begun or intend to begin a doctoral dissertation in the field of global history and/or the history of Europe in global perspective. Of particular interest are candidates with an interest in environmental history (broadly defined), the history of empire, the history of knowledge, and/or human-nature relations.
- You are collegial and open-minded, work well independently, have a talent for organization as well as excellent English proficiency (written and spoken). A strong knowledge of German is desirable (you should at least have a willingness to learn German).
- You are proficient with MS Office.
- You can maintain your focus in the context of a lively Institute environment, and are willing and able to adapt your work schedule to the academic calendar.
