Applications are invited for a two-year post-doctoral position researching the aftermath of slavery in twentieth-century Buganda, starting on or as soon as possible after 10 October 2023. The holder will be affiliated with the History Department and be part of a research group on the aftermath of slavery in East Africa, funded by the European Research Council. The topic of this research project is the life trajectories of formerly enslaved people in Bugandan society from ca. 1900, and the role of slavery in social memory and public discourse.

Applicants will have completed a PhD in African history or a related discipline by the time they start work. For fieldwork purposes, candidates will need a working knowledge of Luganda, a demonstrable capacity for acquiring new languages quickly, or a track record recruiting and working with research assistants in the field.
