The Department of Arts and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, invites applications for two 3-year fully funded PhD scholarships. The candidates are expected to begin on September 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.   

The Department of Arts and Cultural Studies conducts research and runs higher education programs from BA to PhD level in art history, visual culture, musicology, comparative literature, theatre and performance studies, and cultural studies.

The applicant’s qualifications for the scholarship are evaluated by taking into account the applicant’s general educational and academic background such as the applicant’s grade average, thesis grade, language competencies, publications and other academic activities given by the curriculum vitae as well as the duration of study especially during the applicant’s MA programme. 

In addition, the proposed PhD project and study plan will be evaluated by taking the following into consideration; originality, choice of theory and method, disciplinary relevance, and prospects for completion within the required timeframe of 36 months. 

Furthermore, applicants are encouraged to reflect on how their project relates to the research activities and the academic profile at the department.

Qualification requirements 

Please note that applications which do not adhere to the formal requirements (read more in the two sections ‘Admission requirements’ and ‘Application requirements’ below) will not be taken into consideration for the PhD scholarship.   

Admission requirements 

• Applicants need to hold a two-year Master's degree (120 ECTS) or the equivalent. 
• Applicants must have submitted their thesis at the time of application, to the extent the thesis forms part of their Master program. In case you have not obtained your diploma by the application deadline, you must include a statement (pre-approval) from your university declaring that you have been awarded the master degree.   
• Applicants with a non-Danish Master's degree will have their degree assessed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science in order to establish, if the Master's degree is equivalent to a Danish Master's degree. • Excellent communication skills in English is essential and applicants must speak and write academic English fluently. The PhD Administration may ask applicants to document their proficiency in English at any time during the recruitment process, if considered necessary. 

Please include the following in your application package: 

• CV: Please include a complete CV including a list of publications, if you have any.  
• Statement of consent: Statements of consent can be submitted with the application. For example, agreement of access to special archives, agreement of exchange at an international university, or a statement of consent from a potential supervisor/ co-supervisor etc.
• Recommendations and publications: Do NOT upload or submit cover letters, recommendations, publications or your Master thesis.

• Short summary of project description: Max 300 words or 2,000 key strokes incl. spaces.
• Diploma and transcript of records

The following documentation must be submitted:  

• A copy of the applicant's Master's degree diploma (if not available before the application deadline, a pre-approval must be submitted)   
  
• A copy of the applicant's Master’s degree transcript of records (an official description of the grading scale must be included)   
• A copy of the applicant's Bachelor’s degree diploma   
• A copy of the applicant's Bachelor’s degree transcript of records (an official description of the grading scale must be included)   

If the MA diploma and/or examination records are in another language than English, German, French, Spanish, Danish, Norwegian or Swedish, please include a translation into either of these languages in your application. 

The translation of diplomas/certificates and transcripts must be made or approved by either of the following:  

• A state-authorized translator and interpreter  
• The embassy or consulate of the country where the original document was issued or where the translation was made 
• A Danish consulate/embassy
