Call: PhD grants in Anthropology, University of Cape Town
Call for Applications
The programme in the Anthropology of the First Thousand Days of Life at the University of Cape Town is offering two Mellon-funded PhD grants for black South Africans for research on one of the following broad topics: Making Kin; Technologies and Meanings; Becoming a Parent; Understanding ‘Failure to Thrive’. These topics are part of a vibrant research programme, fuller details of which are available at www.thousanddays.uct.ac.za
The PhD Scholarships are valued at R130000 per annum, renewable for a total of three years (2019-2021) on the basis of satisfactory academic progress and availability of funds.
The successful candidate is a black South African who holds an excellent Master’s degree in Anthropology or cognate discipline, with experience in conducting ethnographic research. They will be required to register for full-time study in Anthropology or cognate discipline at UCT and comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures and practises for the postgraduate sector.As members of a lively and engaged research community, they will be expected to play an active role in mentoring younger scholars and developing critical insights into the ways that contemporary knowledges ‘make life’.
Successful candidates will be permitted to take up part-time employment (maximum 15 hours per week) but they may not hold scholarships and salaried/full-time employment concurrently. No service will be required in return for the award.

Applications are due 30 November 2018. Eligible and complete applications will be considered by a Departmental committee. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
