Call: Two Mellon - funded Post doctoral grants to black South Africans

The programme in the Anthropology of the First Thousand Days of Lif eat the University of Cape Town is offering two Mellon-funded Postdoctoral grants to black South Africans.
The research programme examines how new forms of knowledge are shaping policy and intervention in reproduction and early childhood. It consists of three interlocking projects. Formations of Life develops the philosophical grounding to consider how life (material,social and affective) takes form under given conditions. Genes, Technologies, Genealogies explores the relations of life and technology. The projecton Nutrition explores social and affective relations and bodily experiences around nourishment. Black South African scholars within five years of their PhD are invited to work on one of the following broad topics: Making Kin; Technologies and Meanings; Becoming a Parent; Understanding ‘Failure to Thrive’.
The Postdoctoral grants are valued atR200 000 per annum, renewable for a total of two years (2019-2020) on the basis of satisfactory academic progress and availability of funds.No benefits or allowances are included in the value of the fellowship.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD degree in Anthropology or cognate discipline with experience in conducting ethnographic research.They may not previously have held full-time permanent professional or academic posts.
Candidates will be expected to participate fully in the life of the project, to mentor junior scholars and to develop their own research and outputs.They may be invited to teach and supervise,subject to the limits on Postdoctoral researchers.
The successful candidate will be required to register for full-time study in Anthropology or cognate discipline at UCT and comply with the University’s approved policies, procedures and practises for the postdoctoral sector.
