The Institute of African Studies at the Faculty of History, Arts and Oriental Studies at the University of Leipzig offers an:

Academic assistant position
(temporary position for 3 years, extendable for another 3 years)
Salary: Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L/ Besoldungsgruppe W1

Rights and obligations of the job holder derive from the Saxonia state Law on Higher Education (SächsHSFG). The conditions of employment are set down in §§ 72, 73 of the SächsHSFG. It is possible to be appointed with fixed-term civil service status, provided the relevant requirements in civil-service law are met. Length of employment is subject to the limitations set out in the Law on Fixed-Term Contracts in Academia (WissZeitVG)

Duties:

  • Academic qualification ("Habilitation" or 2nd Book)
  • Teaching of 4 resp. 6 hours per week during teaching term according to Saxony's regulations (DAVOHS) at undergraduate (B.A.) and graduate (M.A.) levels in the study programs of the Institute of African Studies
  • Supervision of B.A. and M.A. theses and other study work.
  • Independent research (planning, implementation, funding, publication)
  • Substantial contribution to academic management and administration

Requirements:

  • a completed university education and a Ph.D. of above-average quality in the field of African Studies, preferably sociology of language, linguistic anthropology, postcolonial studies, science & technology studies
  • a regional focus on Eastern or Southern Africa is an advantage
  • profound knowledge of methods and theories
  • knowledge of African languages
  • exceptional communicative, cooperative and organizational capacities
  • good knowledge of German (teaching at BA-level) is a requirement
