Concert: Paul Hanmer (Johannesburg), piano solo
This weekend and together with Robert Pickup (clarinet), Paul Hanmer was scheduled to present his new duo album Morning into Evening and the solo-album Concordia in Switzerland. Due to the travel restricitions we had to cancel the tour. Instead, we organised a house concert, captured on video by Marcus Wyatt and Romy Brauteseth (House on the Hill), which will be broadcast this Sunday at 5pm.
As pianist and composer Paul Hanmer has been a central figure on the South African scene both in the realm of jazz and art music. Already in the transition period, he decidedly contributed to creating a new sound for a new South Africa. His debut album Trains to Taung (1997) is a seminal record and emblematic for these times of change.
In an interview with journalist Gwen Ansell, Paul Hanmer introduces the new album with the following words: “I wanted to deliver a sound that was unmistakably of this place. Not just from home, but from my home.” This Sunday, we not only get the opportunity to listen to the music but also to visit the place where it was created - Paul's study in Observatory with its worn-out piano!
Paul Hanmer turns 60 next year and his friends in Switzerland join forces in order to honour Paul with a decent piano worthy of his music. If you would like to join us please get in touch with Veit Arlt or Richard Butz (kleinaberfein.sg). All supporters will be invited for another online house concert inaugurating the new instrument!
