South Designs for Planetary Futures: "Planetary Occupations x Nana Yaa Biamah Ofosu"
This conversation focuses on occupations as forms of design in response to systemic injustice. Framing occupation as the adaptive reuse of underused spaces unsettles dominant approaches to environmental sustainability and so-called green transitions. The “Planetary Occupations” project team will discuss their work with occupants of Cissie Gool House, a social justice housing occupation in Cape Town, including their design vision from below and counter-plan for the site’s future. In dialogue with architect and educator Nana Yaa Biamah Ofosu, they will outline an approach to ecological design unchained from the logics of property and accumulation.
Part of the Critical Urbanisms lecture series "South Designs: Planetary Futures", an eight-month series of discussions reflecting on how design, thought and practiced from the South, forges planetary futures.
