Egypt and Iraq in Focus at Arab Film Festival Zurich 2018
For the fourth time, the Arab Film Festival Zurich is dedicated to contemporary filmmaking in the Arabic cultural area. From November 15 to November 18, 2018, almost 40 feature films, documentaries and short films will be shown - with repetitions until mid-December. These films provide an access to Arab culture and way of thinking. In many countries where the Arab Spring has failed, there is not only disillusionment. People are also dealing with the new realities and criticism of the conditions is certainly taking place. Many new voices, especially female voices, are making themselves heard, including Yasmine Chouikh (Algeria) with the award-winning opening film Until The End of Time and Eliane Raheb (Lebanon) with Those Who Remain, a documentary about the interreligious conflicts in a Lebanese mountain village not far from the Syrian border. Once again, it shows how creatively young Arab cinema deals with the political and social conditions.
Saturday 17 November is dedicated to Iraqi cinema and Sunday 18 November to Egyptian cinema. On these two days there will be panel discussions on the situation of filmmakers in these countries.
