Anton Wilhelm Amo (c. 1703 – c. 1759) was born in present-day Ghana and became an African & European philosopher during the era of Enlightenment. He studied, wrote and taught at the respective Universities of Halle, Wittenberg and Jena in Germany. By arguing for the rights of people of African descent in Europe, he contributed to the philosophy of liberation and emancipation from slavery.
