Artist Talk: Cherry-Ann Morgan and Kwaku Dapaah Opoku

Part of the exhibition "Dialogue with Benin. Art, Colonialism and Restitution"

In the artworks that Cherry-Ann Morgan and Kwaku Dapaah Opoku have created for the exhibition “In Dialogue with Benin. Art, Colonialism and Restitution”, they reveal new artistic perspectives on historical events like colonialism and slavery.

Caribbean artist and designer Cherry-Ann Morgan keeps storytelling at the heart of her artistic research. In complex multidisciplinary installations she combines her personal family stories with the broader cultural connections between Nigeria and the Caribbean.

Kwaku Dapaah Opoku uses fire as an artistic tool, to remember the British army’s pillaging of Benin City in 1897. His film revolves around his personal connection to cultural heritage in museums, as well as the deeper spiritual meanings of these objects.

The Artist Talk will be moderated by Michaela Oberhofer, curator for Africa at Museum Rietberg and co-curator of the exhibition "In Dialogue with Benin. Art, Colonialism and Restitution".
