Discussion: African Feminism and Activism for Womens' Rights

Afrofeminism

Women from Southern Africa and East Africa discuss about strong women and the struggle for gender equality.

The two women's rights activists Rosewita Katsande and Cynthia Gwenzi report directly from their work in Zimbabwe.

What does feminism mean in an African context? What practical ways are there to promote women's rights? Is a demarcation from Western-style feminism necessary?

The moderated discussion will enable an exchange on the conditions and possibilities for the promotion of women in the context of patriarchal ideas of nation and culture.
The interactive event offers all participants the opportunity to talk about gender equality issues in Africa and Switzerland

The event will be held in English and the discussion will be led by Rita Kesselring, from the Institute of Anthropology. The event is part of the Exchange Visit 2020 with two women from Zimbabwe. You can find more on the topic here.
