Discussion Round: Academic Freedom. More than a human right

fepa Zoom-Meeting

The right to education is a fundamental human right and is a requirement for the cultural, social, political and economic development of individuals and society. After independence, African governments have invested heavily in education, but most young people are still unable to obtain a tertiary degree. While access remains a major problem, those who do study also face a variety of challenges that impede their pursuit of a quality education. Student activism in Southern Africa is severely constrained by high tuition and accommodation fees, restrictions on freedom of association and assembly, and threats of arrest, torture, and imprisonment.

The SAFRAP program helps young people from various student councils from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Swaziland create a student consensus that unites voices and agency and demands academic freedom.

We are joined by guest Gracious Dzapasi, a representative from YETT and students involved in the program who will share their experiences.
