The Centre for African Studies invites you for a special screening of the documentary African Mirror (English and French subtitles), which aims to disrupt the image of Africa that persists in the minds of large parts of the Swiss population. The director, Mischa Hedinger (Bern) discusses and deconstructs the colonial gaze in the works of René Gardi, a former teacher who turned travel writer and film maker. He authored a number of films and dozens of coffee table books depicting an idealized and archaic Africa based on his visits of Northern Cameroon, Tchad and the Sahara and offers an answer to the question what actually motivated this René Gardi’s quest for “Black Arcadia”. Students and PhD students of the University of Basel are offered free entry to this special screening, which will be followed by a discussion.
