Khangelani Moyo: The Zimbabwe-South Africa Migration Corridor and the Potential for Regional Integration in the SADC Region

ALMA Research Series

In 2009 the South African government announced a moratorium on the deportation of irregular Zimbabwean migrants living in the country. This was followed by a special dispensation in 2010 which gave amnesty to all undocumented Zimbabweans and allowed them to apply for special dispensation permits to regularise their stay in South Africa. This programme was renewed in 2014 and 2017, and there is hope that it may be renewed again in 2021. The South African government extended the same permits to Lesotho nationals in 2015 and Angolan refugees in 2017. In this talk, I will reflect on labour migration in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) region, the Zimbabwean crisis, and the implications for policy reform in South Africa and SADC more broadly.
