Mamane Tassiou Amadou: On the Dynamics of Youth Organizations in Zinder City, Niger Republic

Mittwochskolloquium Ethnologie

In Zinder, a poor city of Niger Republic, the fada and palais represent the main places where un/underemployed young people, especially men, gather to socialize around tea, chicha or music and kill boredom. These microstructures, which constitute an alternative to domestic spaces, also play an essential role in the everyday life of certain neighborhoods where the state is almost non-existent. Indeed, they serve as a framework where young people discuss their concerns, help each other, initiate programs, but also mobilize, undertake actions to serve and shape the community.

By considering the fada and palais as sites of all kinds of experimentation, this research, based on anthropological methodological processes of immersion, participation, and observation, offers another look on how Nigerien youth reinvents itself, engages and creates new forms of participation in public life.
