Paul Basu: Museum Affordances - Colonial Collections, Postcolonial Connections
Lecture by Prof. Dr. Paul Basu, Professor of Anthropology, SOAS, University of London
Abstract: Paul Basu draws upon examples of recent and ongoing museum collaboration projects between the United Kingdom and West Africa. He aims at exploring the latent capacity of museums and historical ethnographic collections in particular to act as catalysts for intercultural understanding, for recovering lost or sequestered histories and repairing past injustices. What decolonial possibilities might objects collected in colonial contexts afford, and how might these affordances be activated?
