Reading: Leila Aboulela "Elsewhere home"

Aboulela offers a rich tableau of life as an immigrant abroad, and the challenges of navigating assimilation and difference.

In this collection of stories, Leila Aboulela interweaves the realities of life in Egypt, Sudan and Great Britain; a visit to the old homeland; converting to Islam; growing up as a child in a mixed marriage. Her characters cannot be truly at home ‘elsewhere’, but their experiences of migration make their original ‘homeland’ equally foreign. “Aboulela’s talent is to find the nuances that undermine the clichés.” (Susanna Petrin, NZZ)

LEILA ABOULELA (*1954 in Cairo), grew up as the daughter of an Egyptian mother and a Sudanese father in Khartoum, Sudan. She studied economics and statistics at the local university, as well as economics and politics in London. After many years in Jakarta, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha, she has lived in Aberdeen since 2012. Her work has received many awards and been translated into around fifteen languages.
