Description
The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for the C-MAP Africa Fellow to support envisioning and developing research initiatives on African art and architecture with a focus on mid-century African modernism for The Museum of Modern Arts’ Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP) initiative. Led by the Steven and Lisa Tananbaum curator in Painting and Sculpture, and comprised of MoMA staff members, the Africa group will commence an 18-month study on the subject of postcolonial modernisms, concentrating on the period 1955–1975 and including focuses on particular sub-regions/countries. Following the direction of the group leader, and in consultation with International Program staff, the fellow plans, executes, and documents a lively program of seminars featuring international and domestic scholars at MoMA as well as group travel to the region of study.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinates with the C-MAP group leader and the International Program’s associate director and C-MAP coordinator on the implementation of a research plan and on a program of visiting speakers to be presented at MoMA.
- Identifies artists, curators, and scholars relevant to research focus.
- Prepares for monthly C-MAP group meetings, including compiling relevant research materials, biographies, and meeting agendas in advance of the visits; corresponds with invited speakers; and maintains records of contacts and activities.
- Plans and coordinates group travel, both domestic and international, involving detailed itineraries for visits to cultural institutions, artists’ studios, collections, etc., books flights, coordinates transportation, hotels, dinners, and meetings, etc.; attends and participates in group trips.
- Assists with the organization of and participates in joint symposia organized with the other C-MAP groups.
- Works closely with the International Program’s associate director and C-MAP coordinator, other C-MAP fellows, and the editorial board composed of MoMA staff, to commission texts for and oversees the content development for the post web platform (post.at.moma.org).
- With C-MAP coordinator and associate director, reports on C-MAP group activities to funders.
- Researches and keeps C-MAP teams and group members informed about relevant exhibitions and events related to the group’s area of focus.
- Supports other Museum research activities related to C-MAP group focus, as needed.
- Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.
Requirements:
- Master’s degree in art history, cultural studies, and/or a related field in the humanities (or the equivalent in countries outside the United States). Specialized knowledge of modern African art spanning the period in focus, or the equivalent level of experience. Phil or PhD candidates preferred. Independent researchers with a strong expertise in the area of focus will also be considered.
- Strong knowledge of 20th- and 21st-century art history within a global context and knowledge of art history in Africa preferred.
- Experience working within an art institution context preferred.
- Demonstrated research and writing capabilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to successfully work as part of a team
- Strong administrative experience and knowledge of basic organizational procedures
- Written and spoken fluency in English and one or more of the following languages preferred: French, Portuguese, one or more African languages preferred
- Deep familiarity with travel and artistic centers on the continent preferred.
