Job: Junior Professor of African Languages and the Construction of Knowledge

The University of Bayreuth is a research-oriented university with internationally competitive, interdisciplinary focus areas in research and teaching. The Faculty of Languages & Literatures at the University of Bayreuth is currently seeking to appoint a Junior Professor of African Languages and the Construction of Knowledge (pay grade: W1) with Tenure Track to W3 to commence as soon as possible (minimum salary per month: 4,912 euros) as a fixed-term civil servant position. This tenure track professorship is funded by the Tenure Track Programme of the German Federal Government and the Federal States.
We are looking for an early-career scholar with the ability to work independently and a high degree of development potential. The future junior professor will represent the discipline Afrikanistik (linguistics with reference to African languages) in both research and teaching. Applicants are expected to have a focus on Afrikanistik (structural linguistics, sociolinguistics or anthropological linguistics). Furthermore, experience in both teaching and research in the discipline of Afrikanistik or a corresponding field are preconditions as well as experience in field research and a strong command of at least one African language.
Active participation in the University of Bayreuth’s research priorities, especially in the field of “African Studies”, is a central aspect of the professorship. In particular, participation in the multi- and interdisciplinary Cluster “Africa Multiple. Reconfiguring African Studies”, the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) and close cooperation with the neighbouring disciplines of the faculty are expected.
Teaching takes place in the framework of the BA and MA study programmes "African Verbal and Visual Arts“ and the MA study programme “Language – Interaction – Culture” as well as in the context of the “Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies” (BIGSAS). The ability to teach in English is required.
The successful candidate will initially be hired as a fixed-term civil servant for a period of three years and may be extended for an additional three years upon successful evaluation in the third year of employment. The teaching load is currently set at 5 hours of instruction in the first phase and 7 hours of instruction in the second phase.
The performance agreement, which defines the criteria for the interim and tenure evaluation, is drawn up by the university and the applicant during the appointment negotiations. The agreement shall include criteria in the categories of Research and Academic Teaching, and may also include Third Mission and Academic Engagement. The appointment to the W3 professorship depends exclusively on the outcome of the tenure evaluation.
