"In our own words": Online lecture series on Africa’s contribution to scholarship
The Pilot African Postgraduate Academy (PAPA) in Bamako encourages young African scholars to engage with epistemological issues and with the contribution of knowledge acquired in Africa to the further development of science in general. In a new public online lecture series, renowned African academics take up the idea of PAPA and offer insights into their research.
PAPA intends to strengthen basic research in the humanities and social sciences in Africa and represent it in a self-confident manner vis-à-vis other research environments. In doing so, the Academy responds to the prevailing trend of neglecting genuine research in favour of an education focusing on application and direct political and economic benefit. The Academy’s goal is therefore to place greater focus on Africa’s important role in the further development of the humanities and social sciences in consideration of the special historical circumstances and the epistemological questions posed by knowledge production in Africa. The programme under the supervision of Mamadou Diawara (University of Frankfurt, Germany) and Elísio Macamo (ZASB) is based at Point Sud in Bamako, Mali, and funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation.
Now, in the form of the “Africa’s Contribution to Scholarship” lecture series renowned African academics are taking up the idea of the academy: On the Gerda Henkel Foundation’s L.I.S.A. science portal they offer insights into their research. An initial discussion with the initiators and the first lecture are now available as downloads. The other contributions will follow at 14-day intervals.
