Concert: Thandi Ntuli Sextet (Johannesburg)

Pianist Thandi Ntuli is the shooting star of the South African jazz scene.

Thandi Ntuli

Firmly rooted in Hard Bop and African music traditions, Thandi Ntuli enchants her audiences and recently received the Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year award. Her compositions unfold simple meditative themes which the pianist and singer revisits and extends harmonically in a spiral movement. After a first short visit to Basel in February 2018 Thandi Ntuli now embarks on a residency funded by the Swiss arts council Pro Helvetia. For this sextet she combines her South African rhythm section with Florian Egli (sax) and Lukas Thoeni (trumpet).

Line-up:

Thandi Ntuli: piano/vocals
Lukas Thoeni: trumpet
Florian Egli: alto sax
Keenan Ahrends: guitar
Shane Cooper: bass
Sphelelo Mazibuko: drums
