Jazz from an African perspective – beyond Western ideologies and limitationn (on the occasion of the International Jazz Day)

Sisonke Xonti

The sax player Sisonke Xonti is one of important young voices of the South African jazz scene. Coined by jazz legends such as Ezra Ngucana, Mankunku Ngozi and Zim Nggqwana, he has long already been a popular sideman, who broke off his studies and made his hobby to his profession. His debut album «Lyonde» was issued in 2017 and was awarded as Standard Bank Young Jazz Artist of the Year in 2020. Xonti searches with his instrument for the tone and the voice of Africa, he moves between the rolling rhythm and melodies of Easter Cape and the sound of urban centres. On the occasion of the International Jazz Day, he presents new music with guitarist Keenan Ahrends, bass player Romy Brauteseth and drummer Sphelelo Mazibuko.

Line-up: Sisonke Xonti: tenor sax, Keenan Ahrends: guitar, Romy Brauteseth: bass, Sphelelo Mazibuko: drums
