Onookome Okome: Women in Nollywood

Mittwochskolloquium Ethnologie

How do we read the obvious anachronisms of the representations of women in popular Nollywood films and what do they tell us about the Africa in popular arts made in Africa? This is the main question that I take on in the book length study of the Nollywood film industry that produces the continent’s most travelled popular artifact, the Nollywood film. In the last twenty years or more this industry has been influential in the making of popular culture in Africa and the iteration of women has been an active part of that popularity in both old and new Nollywood films. This presentation calls attention to the different regimes of this iteration, offering explanations for the persistency of certain kinds of images of women and what they mean to the making of women in popular culture in contemporary Africa.
